Computers Get In Touch with Your Emotions →
infoneer-pulse: Computers could be a lot more useful if they paid attention to how you felt. With the emergence of new tools that can measure a person’s biological state, computer interfaces are starting to do exactly that: take users’ feelings into account. So claim several speakers at Blur, a conference this week in Orlando, Florida, that focused on human-computer interaction. » via...

Google’s New Algorithm Cuts Off Content Farmers at... →
mudwerks: Google launched an incredibly aggressive algorithm change last night aimed at ridding your search results of content farms and scrapers. Since the announcement that co-founder Larry Page will take over as CEO in April, the company has been releasing small fixes attempting to win back the Internet’s good graces after widespread criticism that its search results were too self-promotional...

Finding more high-quality sites in search →
infoneer-pulse: Our goal is simple: to give people the most relevant answers to their queries as quickly as possible. This requires constant tuning of our algorithms, as new content—both good and bad—comes online all the time. Many of the changes we make are so subtle that very few people notice them. But in the last day or so we launched a pretty big algorithmic improvement to our ranking—a...

CNNMoney Tech Tumblr: Microsoft resorts to Angry... →
cnnmoneytech: Screenshot by CNNMoney Somewhere in Redmond is a small cemetery filled with former Microsoft search engines. MSN, Windows Live, Live, Bing - the software giant has always struggled to gain a presence in search. In an effort to reach more people, it appears Ballmer & Co. have decided to offer…

inception - The movie, explained through C code →
thechangelog: I’ll be honest: this is one of the cooler things I’ve seen recently: /* * Create separate threads for the main protagonists involved in the inception */ static void *inception(void *unused) { struct sched_param param = {.sched_priority = 99 }; int policy = SCHED_OTHER; if(!getuid() || !geteuid()) { output("Setting policy to real time...

Russia, Glenn Beck agree: Google fomenting actual... →
mudwerks: It’s no big surprise to find out that Vladimir Putin’s Russia doesn’t much appreciate protests against authoritarian regimes. It’s more surprising to find American TV talk show host Glenn Beck saying the same thing. And gets twice as weird when both men name Google as a potent force behind the protests currently sweeping the Middle East… [crazy-ass-consensus…]

Kindle e-Book Piracy Accelerates →
rachelmennies: Will the large-scale financial death that’s befallen the music industry come next to books? Now that we’re working (at least partially) in the digital realm, the risks of piracy and illegal distribution of books have never been greater. Some interesting thoughts from David Carnoy over at cnet.com.

New Hacking Tools Pose Bigger Threats to Wi-Fi... →
continuum: You may think the only people capable of snooping on your Internet activity are government intelligence agents or possibly a talented teenage hacker holed up in his parents’ basement. But some simple software lets just about anyone sitting next to you at your local coffee shop watch you browse the Web and even assume your identity online. Lovely.

CNNMoney Tech Tumblr: another Facebook faux pas →
cnnmoneytech: So it appears I have to take a hit to my pride to share this tale because, you see, I was limbo’d. That’s right: I’m referring to Facebook friend request limbo. That’s what happens when a friend request is “hidden” instead of accepted or denied, and the request just sits in friend request…

Free Tech for Teachers: 10 Ways for Teachers &... →
thingsforteachers: I use Google Sites & possibly Wordpress next year for my class website, which are not on the list. I’m guessing because they may take a little more time to figure out and not be as accessible to teachers/students who aren’t familiar with making websites.

Can You Trust Automated Grading? →
infoneer-pulse: If a computer can win at “Jeopardy,” can one grade the essays of freshmen? At George Mason University Saturday, at the Fourth International Conference on Writing Research, the Educational Testing Service presented evidence that a pilot test of automated grading of freshman writing placement tests at the New Jersey Institute of Technology showed that computer programs can be...

Google Body →
thingsforteachers: Google is offering a Google Maps-type product called Google Body. It acts like Google Maps does, only with the insides of the human body. I haven’t tried this out because you need specific browsers to use it, but maybe some sciencey people out there will have a use for this.
